A centimetre of the 'difference between countries' lives in the ruler

Press the ruler into the pubic bone and a population gains a centimetre without a single man changing. Most international size comparisons are comparing techniques, not people.

There is a decision buried in the methods section of every penis-size study, it takes one sentence to describe, and it is worth more than most of the geography anyone argues about.

The decision is this: do you press the ruler into the pubic bone, or not?

If you press — pushing the ruler through the fat pad at the base until it meets bone — you capture the buried portion of the shaft. If you rest the ruler on the skin, you do not. Same man, same instrument, same afternoon, and the two techniques disagree by a centimetre or more, with the gap widening the heavier the man is, because there is more pad to push through.

Now go and look at a chart ranking countries by average size. Go on. Then ask yourself: does that chart tell you which studies pressed?

It does not. It never does. And the difference it is not telling you about is frequently larger than the differences it is showing you.

The list of things that move the number before biology gets a turn

The ruler press is the biggest confounder but it is nowhere near the only one. Here is what varies between studies that all claim to report the same thing.

  1. Bone-pressed or not, as above. Worth roughly a centimetre, and correlated with body composition, which is correlated with country. So this one confounder alone can manufacture a plausible-looking national pattern out of nothing.
  2. Who measured. One examiner, two, three? Different examiners produce systematically different readings, which is why the better studies report how many did the measuring and some report inter-rater agreement. It is also why a study measured by three examiners and a study measured by one are not interchangeable.
  3. Stretched, flaccid or erect. These are three different measurements. Stretched length is the one clinicians favour, because it is reproducible in a clinic and tracks erect length closely. Erect figures in the literature are frequently self-induced or self-reported, which drags them upward.
  4. Posture. Standing and supine give different numbers. Some studies say which; many do not.
  5. Who volunteered. A study recruiting from a fertility clinic, a conscription physical, a urology waiting room and a university campus are sampling four different populations, and only one of those settings involves men who chose to be measured for reasons unrelated to their genitals.
  6. Which decade. A study from the early nineties and one from 2021 were done under different norms about consent, arousal, and reporting. Pooling them is standard practice and also a real limitation.

Stack those up and you have several centimetres of methodological slack. The entire spread of published national averages — from the lowest figure anyone has traced to the highest — fits comfortably inside it.

That is not a reason to throw the data away. It is a reason to read it as what it is: a set of measurements of men, taken by particular people, in particular ways, in particular rooms. Every one of those figures is true about the study that produced it. Very few of them are true about a country.

The variance nobody mentions

Here is the statistic that should end most of these arguments, and never does.

The spread between individual men inside any single country is far larger than the gap between any two national averages. Not slightly larger. Several times larger.

Pick the two countries you think are furthest apart on any published list. The distance between them is a fraction of the distance between the tenth and ninetieth percentile of men within either one. Which means that if you know a man's nationality, you have learned close to nothing about him — and if you know his percentile, the nationality adds almost nothing on top.

This is not a special fact about this trait. It is the ordinary situation for nearly every human measurement anyone has ever tried to rank by country: within-group variation swamps between-group variation. The rankings look meaningful because ranked lists always look meaningful. A list is a rhetorical device. It converts a cloud of overlapping distributions into an ordered sequence and quietly discards the overlap, which was the entire interesting part.

So why does this site have a ranked list of countries?

Fair question, and I would rather answer it than dodge it.

Because a daily guessing game needs a daily answer, and because the honest version of this data is more interesting than the dishonest one. Dickle plays on a single metric — stretched length, clinician-measured — for exactly the reason this article exists: the moment you mix an erect figure from one country with a stretched figure from another, your game is testing which researcher happened to be on duty rather than anything about a population.

That rule is expensive. It is why the rotation is around two dozen countries rather than the hundred and ninety you see on the viral maps. Several large, well-studied countries are missing entirely, not because nobody has studied them, but because what got published was erect length, or a post-surgical delta, or a figure with no traceable primary source — and each of those would have to be laundered into the same column to make the list longer. We would rather have a short honest list.

And every reveal screen prints the study, the year, the sample size and the method, including whether it was bone-pressed. If today's country looks improbably high, the reveal will usually tell you why in four words. That is the difference between a chart and a citation.

What to do with any size chart you meet from now on

Three questions, and almost nothing on the internet survives them.

Who measured? If the answer is "men, themselves," you can stop reading. Self-report inflates, and it inflates unevenly across cultures, which is precisely the axis a country chart claims to be measuring.

Which measurement? If it does not say stretched, flaccid or erect, the chart is mixing them, because the underlying literature reports all three and no one number covers all of it.

What is the sample size, per country? A figure resting on fifty men and a figure resting on fifteen thousand should not sit in the same column with the same visual weight. In the source literature they are separated by an order of magnitude of confidence, and a coloured map flattens that to nothing.

Apply those three and the map with 190 shaded countries collapses into what it always was — a beautifully rendered picture of the parts of the world where someone was willing to guess.
